Requesting Loans

9/18/2025 5:50:33 PM

Please provide the following information via the message board when contacting us:
Your full name.
The address of the institution to which the loan will be sent.
Your phone number.
Your e-mail address.
If you are a student or temporarily affiliated with a host institution, the loan must be sent through a permanent staff member of that institution (for students, this is typically the academic advisor).
Please provide that person's full name and title, and have them indicate their agreement to take responsibility for the loan by co-signing your request letter or notifying us directly.
A brief description of your research topic and the type of data you are seeking should be included.
Please list your loan request using NMMBA catalog numbers. Relevant information can be found in our collection database.
Please note that taxonomic identifications may not always be accurate; use caution when assuming the provided identifications are correct.
We do not lend type specimens. If you wish to examine type material, please do so in person at our museum (exceptions may apply in special cases).
For rare or high-value specimens, loan requests will be evaluated by the Collection Management Committee members.
We do not lend all specimens of a given taxon at once.
If a request is made for all specimens of a species, we usually send about half initially. The remaining portion will only be sent after the first half is returned.
If you find some lots are of higher priority, please indicate clearly which ones you would like to receive first.
The maximum number of specimens per loan is 30 items. Please return the current loaned items before submitting a new request.
Dissection is only allowed with the permission of the Collection Management Committee members.
For any changes in specimen names, catalog numbers, specimen status, or related issues, please contact the Collection Management Committee members directly.
If you publish a paper or thesis using specimens from our collection, we would appreciate receiving a copy of the work for our records.
For specimen exchange inquiries, please contact the Collection Management Committee members directly.
